Cornerstone Foundations for Families

Mission:

Cornerstone: Foundations for Families is a federally registered 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation. As a licensed child welfare agency, Cornerstone is governed by a Board of Directors chosen from community leaders. Cornerstone offers a wide array of counseling, support and psychiatric services to individuals, couples and families. A major focus of services is at-risk children and their families. The mission of Cornerstone is: Helping people meet life’s challenges by providing the skills, support and hope needed for effective fulfilling lives.

History:

Just prior to World War II, several progressive women leaders of the Quincy community including Fabiola Moorman began to recognize the need for counseling and social services in the area. After much perseverance by these women, Cornerstone was eventually established in 1947 with the hiring of one social worker. From its earliest beginnings, Cornerstone (formerly Family Service Agency of Adams County) has been guided by its mission of helping people. Over the past 62 years, the agency has grown to serving more than 2,500 individuals per year through several programs for at-risk children, youth and families.

Highlights:

Cornerstone provides mental health counseling, casework and psychiatric services for individuals of all ages. Several programs specifically address the needs of at-risk children and their families. Counseling Services: Cornerstone offers individual counseling to all age groups, marital counseling and family counseling. Funding from the United Way of Adams County allows the agency to provide a sliding fee scale for individuals without health insurance. Cornerstone is a Preferred Provider for most insurance plans and an Employee Assistance Program provider for many local employers. Family Support Services: A wide variety of case management services are available for at-risk children and their families. Services are focused to help children stay engaged in school and prevent truancy/delinquency which place youth at-risk for out-of-home placement. Caseworkers may also assist relative care-givers obtain guardianship in order for care-givers to enroll children in school and obtain medical care. The agency’s programming reflects what is known about how to best help at-risk families—namely, start early. Cornerstone’s state-of-the-art intensive home visiting program, part of Healthy Families Illinois, provides new young parents the support they need and the early parenting skills shown to be of utmost importance in the prevention of child abuse and neglect. Psychiatric Services: Cornerstone offers psychiatric evaluation and medication management for children and adults with convenient and timely appointments.

Ways to Give:

Charitable gifts may be given to Cornerstone: Foundations for Families, the legal name of the not-for-profit corporation. Gifts may be designated for a special purpose or program, or be left unrestricted to meet current needs within the organization. Areas of Charitable Support Needed:

  1. General Operating Funds — Charitable funding from private donors fills in the gaps between the actual costs of services and the monies received from clients and other funding sources. These donations also allow us to develop new programs in response to community needs and to maintain the facility and the equipment needed to run the organization.
  2. Endowment — Endowment gifts insure the future of Cornerstone by providing dependable interest income on the principal gift. Endowment gifts may be made to the organization through Cornerstone: Foundations for Families Fund set up with the Community Foundation of the Quincy Area. For more information regarding this fund, contact the Community Foundation at (217) 222-1237.
